D&D SE4 - Getting Started

Description

This page provides details on how to join in the roleplaying fun.

Open RPG

We use a program called Open RPG. It provides a real time chat medium, as well as many handy tools to make playing pen and paper RPGs over the internet much easier. Follow the instructions on their downloads page to install it. Remember, you must install Python, wxPython and Open RPG!

Character Sheet

After installing Open RPG, you need to make your character sheet. Follow these instructions:

  1. In the Game Tree section at the top left corner, expand OpenRPG 1.6.1 (click on the little plus next to it).
  2. Expand Templates.
  3. Expand Tools.
  4. Look for 3rd Edition Character Tool. Double click on it, or right click and select Use. It will add a new item at the top of Game Tree entiled 3rd Edition Character Tool.
  5. Right click on this new item and select Design, Or double click on it.
  6. Now you can fill out the sheet. You can find a chart on the point buy system we used for ability scores here.

Character Creation

Player can spend up to 40 points to create a character using the following chart:

  1. Ability = Cost
  2. 8 = 0 points
  3. 9 = 1 point
  4. 10 = 2 points
  5. 11 = 3 points
  6. 12 = 4 points
  7. 13 = 5 points
  8. 14 = 6 points
  9. 15 = 8 points
  10. 16 = 10 points
  11. 17 = 13 points
  12. 18 = 16 points

Connecting to the server.

To connect to the Open RPG server that we use, follow these instructions:

  1. Run Open RPG Client no console (or start.py in the install folder).
  2. Click on the Open RPG menu (all the way on the left).
  3. Click on the Chat tab.
  4. Click on where it says "No Name", in the first line of data fields. Enter the name you wish to display on the chat rooms. Click ok.
  5. Now you have to exit Open RPG and reopen it to get the settings changes to take effect. Note: You only need to change your name the first time you load up Open RPG.
  6. After reloading Open RPG, click on the Game Server menu and select Browse Servers.
  7. Locate the server Alkazhar in the list. If it is not there, the server is down. After selecting it, click on Connect.
  8. Select an option from the Game section on the right. You probably want to just select the Lobby at first. Click on Join Room.
  9. Click on Close Window on the bottom left side of this screen.

Rules.

If you do not possess the official rule books, you can get the gist of the rules from the Official Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 System Reference Documents.

Now, you are ready to go!
