In times of war, heroes are made from normal people, as are villains.  More often, though, the brutal necessities of surviving such times make men heroes to those they protect, and villains to any others. When all men are prey, it is an easy thing to become a beast, but not such an easy thing to return to being a man...

When all of Oerth was torn apart by the great wars, thousands of people were uprooted, ripped from their homes by war, famine, and the lawlessness and chaos which accompany such misfortune.  The family of Khahadin was one such; villagers from the border regions of Aerdry, of Suel descent, their small clan had hunted and logged the wooded hills of the Adri Forest for years.  When the wars came, the border regions of most lands were devastated, but the Great Kingdom more than most, for the Bone March fell and humanoids poured across the borders.  Hardy fighters and woodsmen, the clan was able to fend off most skulkers or carrion-pickers, but even they could fall prey to some of the larger war bands.  Marauding gnolls burned their village and most of the clan was killed.  Those that remained picked their way south and west, staying together and seeking some safety.

Khahadin was only a boy then, and his mother and sisters were killed in the attack.  He and his father Khaelad, who was one of the village hunters and scouts, headed south with the rest of the surviving villagers, and Khahadin was quickly forced into the role of a man, and soon, of a killer.

The forest or Adri and the borderlands to the south were brutal places in this time, crawling with humanoids, bandits and deserters.  A small group without many warriors had to move swiftly, silently and without a trace, or death would come quickly.  Desperately learning the skills he needed just to survive, Khahadin and his father hunted, scouted and guided the small group southwards, towards what they hoped was safety.

The woods were a merciless place to learn, but Khahadin was quickly growing into his skills and strength, and was soon as tireless and strong as his father.  Still, others matched their woodcraft, and they were hunted beneath the trees.  Hobgoblin trackers found the trail of the group.  Khahadin, his father and several of the other village men hid the women and children and led the pursuers off.  The hunt lasted days, and one by one the other men were pulled down by the huge wolves the hobgobins used as tracking dogs, or were run to ground and cut down.  Finally, only Khahadin and Khaelad remained.

Run to exhaustion, the pair found a defensive spot along the banks of a small river and turned to make a stand.  Arrows and hunting javelins drove off the wolf pack, but a rush by the armed hobgoblin hunters hurled Khahadin into the river, and Khaelad was pinned to the riverbank with spears.  Wounded and weeping, Khahadin escaped into the woods, his head whirling with rage and anguish.

It was many days later when the villages saw Khahadin again.  A woman spotted him, crouching in the trees, daubed with blood and encrusted with dirt, but he fled immediately when she saw him.  It took them days to coax him back to camp, and he would not speak to anyone, and would disappear for days at a time.  No sign was found of Khaelad, or of the hobgoblins, and the only sign of what had happened was the 9 hobgoblin teeth strung on a thong around Khahadin's neck.

Despite the care of the villager, Khahadin did not come all the way back to them as they continued south.  He rarely spoke, and often disappeared into the woods.  The only sign the villagers saw were the occasional gutted deer left near the camp, or the bodies of enemies, sprawled amongst the trees.  Even when he came into camp to sleep and eat, Khahadin seemed tense, coiled like a spring, and the rage in his eyes caused even the kindest clansman to flinch back.

The journey south took months, and Khahadin watched over the clan the whole way, but grew wilder and more elusive.  Finally, the few remaining villager, only a few dozen now, found a small coastal town that the war had not yet touched.  There, they used their skills to earn money enough to pay for passage on a Rhenee barge.  During these months, the villages patiently sought out Khahadin in the woods, calmed him, and set him hunting and tanning hides.  He found that the quite concentration of leatherworking calmed the rage within him, and became a skilled leatherworker, trapper and tanner.

Khahadin went with the clan when they came west, and the villagers finally set up a leatherworking and furriery in a small village near Ulek. Khahadin travels, hunts, and works as a woods guide and sell sword throughout the western heartlands, but rarely turns down a chance to strike at humanoids or monsters, as the rage within him has never completely calmed.

Khahadin is a tall, strong young man, with long brown hair and the light blue eyes and pale skin of one who has strong Suel blood.  He wears a hunting suit of heavy leathers and wolf skins, beautifully worked with patterns of leaves and hunting beasts that he made himself.  He carries a long hunting spear and a handful of javelins.  He wears crossed throwing axes on his wide leather belt, and a single-bladed working axe hangs at his side.  He moves gracefully, and his wide shoulders make his strength apparent.

Khahadin is an angry man, but he keeps his anger on a tight leash, unless he is in combat.  Then he explodes with blinding rage that carries him through the battle.  He fights with his spear in one hand and a vicious spiked shield and a pair of javelins in the other.  He tends to throw his javelins and axes before closing, and he prefers to attack from ambush or use his quickness to hit and run enemies or attack them from behind.
